Heating Installation in St. Petersburg, FL

The Right Heating System for Florida's Unique Climate

Heating in Florida: Different Rules Apply

Heating in St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay area is a fundamentally different challenge than heating in most of the country. Our winters are mild — typical lows are in the mid-40s to low 50s Fahrenheit, with brief cold snaps occasionally dipping into the 30s. We don't need a heating system sized to battle sustained below-freezing temperatures. What Florida homeowners do need is a heating system that provides comfortable indoor temperatures efficiently for the relatively few hours per year that heating is needed, without the high capital cost or fuel infrastructure of systems designed for northern climates. Choosing the right heating solution for a Florida home requires understanding these local conditions, not applying a national standard.

Heating in Florida: Different Rules Apply

Heat Pumps: The Best Heating Choice for Most Florida Homes

For the vast majority of Tampa Bay homeowners, a heat pump is the ideal heating solution — and it's the option Killian's Air most frequently recommends. Heat pumps are not standalone heating equipment; they are complete HVAC systems that provide both cooling and heating using the same refrigerant-based technology. In cooling mode, they move heat from inside your home to the outside air. In heating mode, they reverse that process, extracting heat energy from outdoor air and moving it inside. The key efficiency advantage of heat pumps over electric resistance heating (like electric furnaces) is that they move heat rather than generate it. A heat pump can deliver two to four times as much heat energy as it consumes in electricity. In Florida's mild winters, where outdoor temperatures rarely drop below 40°F, heat pumps operate in their most efficient range nearly always — making them the lowest operating-cost heating option for our climate.

Electric Furnaces, Gas Furnaces, and Dual-Fuel Systems

While heat pumps are the most efficient heating option for most Florida homes, there are situations where other systems make sense. Electric furnaces provide simple, reliable heat using electric resistance coils. They have lower upfront costs than heat pumps but higher operating costs, since resistance heating is less efficient than heat pump operation. For homes in areas with very low electricity rates or where the heating load is very small, an electric furnace may be a pragmatic choice. Gas furnaces are less common in Pinellas County because natural gas infrastructure is not as widely available as in other regions, but where gas is available they can provide very rapid, powerful heating at competitive fuel costs. Dual-fuel systems pair a heat pump with a gas furnace backup, using the heat pump for the majority of heating (when it is most efficient) and switching to gas heat only during the rare occasions when temperatures drop low enough that the heat pump's efficiency decreases.

  • Heat pump — most efficient for Florida, provides both heating and cooling
  • Electric furnace — lower upfront cost, higher operating cost, heating-only
  • Gas furnace — where natural gas is available, rapid powerful heat
  • Dual-fuel — heat pump plus gas backup for maximum efficiency and reliability
  • Mini-split heat pump — zone-specific heating without ductwork

Sizing and Installation for Florida's Mild Winters

Proper sizing for a heating system in Florida is just as important as sizing for cooling — but the dominant factor here is cooling load, not heating load. In Tampa Bay, the cooling season is far longer and more demanding than the heating season. A heat pump sized correctly for cooling will almost always provide more than adequate heating capacity for our winters. Where oversizing for cooling can cause problems (short-cycling and poor dehumidification), systems that are properly sized for Florida's cooling demands are also well-matched for heating. Killian's Air evaluates your home's insulation, window area, ceiling height, and orientation to ensure proper sizing. We also evaluate your existing ductwork or, for ductless installations, identify the appropriate placement and capacity for indoor air handlers in each zone. All installations meet current Florida Building Code requirements and are permitted where required.
