When a WiFi Thermostat Install Doesn't Go Quite as Planned
Got a call here in St. Petersburg from a homeowner who had bought himself a new WiFi thermostat.
He decided to install it.
Then his AC quit working.
Not exactly how he planned that afternoon going.
He called me and I headed over. From what he was telling me, I had a pretty good idea of what I was walking into, so I brought what I thought I'd need.
Thankfully, this one wasn't too bad.
I figured out what happened and got the AC working again.
Now we still had a thermostat sitting there that needed to be installed.
So, I installed it.
Figured I Might as Well Show Him Too
I could've just put the thermostat on the wall and been done with it, but he wanted to know what had gone wrong.
We went through it together.
I showed him what I was doing as I finished the installation so next time he'd have a better idea of what he was looking at.
He made a joke in his review afterward about me teaching him step-by-step so he wouldn't make the same mistake twice.
Hey, that's one way to learn.
I've done the same thing with stuff around my own house.
Looks easy.
Start taking it apart.
About ten minutes later you're thinking maybe you should've called somebody.
It happens.
Since I Was There, I Looked Over the AC Too
I had everything with me, so I went ahead and did a little preventative maintenance on the AC while I was there.
Didn't make much sense to get the system running and ignore a couple things I could take care of at the same time.
So that's what we did.
Got the original problem fixed.
Finished the WiFi thermostat installation.
Did some maintenance.
Everything was working when I left.
And I kept it all within the price of the service call.
That was pretty much the day.
His Review Cracked Me Up
He started it with:
"Killian rules!"
Can't say I've gotten that exact review before.
He said he was glad Yelp connected us and that he liked that I came prepared to do more than just deal with the thermostat.
He also called me a super cool person.
I'll take it.
But then he said something I appreciate even more.
They're switching over to Killian's for all of their AC needs.
That's a good service call in my book.
I don't need somebody to write a fancy review.
I want to fix what you called me for, take care of anything else that makes sense while I'm there and hopefully be the guy you call next time.
This one just happened to start with a WiFi thermostat that fought back.
